Weston Super Mare by Banksy presents a quietly unsettling scene: an elderly figure sits peacefully on a seaside bench, hands folded and cane resting beside them, completely unaware of the enormous circular saw tearing through the ground in their direction. The contrast is deliberate. Banksy places a moment of calm everyday life against an unstoppable force, hinting at the uncomfortable reality that even those living comfortably in a typical British coastal town aren’t exempt from the inevitability of time — or mortality — catching up with them. The original canvas, first shown in Bristol in 2000, featured a bright blue sky and the sitter dressed in a green coat. Years later, Weston-super-Mare gained further significance in Banksy’s career as the site of Dismaland (2015), his darkly satirical “bemusement park” which drew more than 150,000 visitors and cemented the town’s place within his cultural narrative.
