About the Artwork
Pierre Soulages, known as the "Master of Black," created a series of gouache paintings that reflect his signature exploration of light, texture, and depth through the dominance of black forms. Unlike his Outrenoir (Beyond Black) paintings, which focus on oil and the physical reflection of light on thick black surfaces, Soulages' gouache works demonstrate his ability to manipulate the medium in a more fluid and expressive manner. In his Gouache pieces, Soulages uses bold, gestural black strokes, often layered over white or neutral backgrounds, to create a striking contrast. The opacity of gouache paint allows for a deep, matte finish, emphasizing the weight and movement of his brushwork. His compositions are typically minimalist yet powerful, with broad, irregular black forms intersecting and overlapping, evoking a sense of raw energy and spontaneity. Unlike the highly reflective surfaces of his oil paintings, his gouache works absorb light, giving them a more intimate and graphic quality. Despite their seemingly simple nature, they retain the same philosophical depth, exploring the relationship between form, void, and perception—a central theme in Soulages' entire body of work. Soulages’ Gouache works stand as a testament to his lifelong dedication to abstract expression, proving that even within the constraints of a simpler medium, his ability to manipulate black remains unparalleled.
About the Artist
Pierre Soulages (1919–2022) was a French painter and printmaker renowned for his mastery of black and its expressive potential in art. He became famous for his "Outrenoir" (Beyond Black) series, in which he used thick layers of black paint to create textured, light-reflecting surfaces. A leading figure in Lyrical Abstraction and Tachisme, Soulages' work focuses on contrast, materiality, and the interaction between light and darkness. His minimalist yet deeply expressive style earned him widespread recognition, and he remained active in his artistic practice well into his 100s. His influence extends across contemporary abstraction, proving that simplicity and depth can coexist in powerful ways.

“I’ve worked with Crusoe Contemporary for about 18 months now, and every painting has been an easy purchase”

“I’ve worked with Crusoe Contemporary for about 18 months now, and every painting has been an easy purchase.

They just get what I want. Unlike other galleries where it’s ‘take it or leave it,’ Crusoe is flexible, knowledgeable, and has a different approach. I’ve had commissions before where you never even meet the artist, but with Crusoe, you’re part of the process—you get proofs, you give feedback, and the final piece is exactly what you wanted. I can call them with an idea and within hours or days, they’ve found exactly what I’m looking for. Nine times out of ten, you don’t even know a piece is available—but Crusoe will go and find it.

Just do it. Just work with them.”
