About the Artwork
Horizontal 'Spots' I is a woodcut print by Damien Hirst, one of the most renowned contemporary artists known for his exploration of color, repetition, and pharmaceutical themes. This piece is part of Hirst’s famous "Spots" series, in which he creates grids or patterns of evenly spaced, vibrantly colored circles. However, unlike many of his other Spot Paintings, which are typically done in screen printing or acrylic, this artwork is a woodcut print, giving it a more textured and organic feel. In Horizontal 'Spots' I, the composition consists of rows of circular spots arranged in a horizontal orientation, each filled with a unique hue. The colors are carefully chosen to create harmony and contrast, evoking a sense of controlled randomness. The use of woodcut printing adds a tactile quality, subtly differentiating it from Hirst’s more industrially produced Spot Paintings. Hirst’s Spots series is often associated with his interest in pharmaceutical aesthetics, as the dots resemble the color-coded pills and capsules seen in medicine. The artist himself has stated that these works explore the relationship between art, science, and human perception, using color as a universal language of emotion and meaning. Horizontal 'Spots' I stands out for its precise composition, vibrant palette, and unique use of the woodcut technique, demonstrating Hirst’s ability to blend traditional printmaking methods with his signature contemporary style.
About the Artist
Damien Hirst (born June 7, 1965) is a British contemporary artist, entrepreneur, and art collector, best known for his provocative and often controversial works exploring themes of life, death, and consumerism. As a leading figure in the Young British Artists (YBA) movement of the 1990s, Hirst gained fame with his series of preserved animals in formaldehyde, including The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991), featuring a shark suspended in a glass tank. His other notable works include the diamond-encrusted skull For the Love of God (2007) and his spot and spin paintings. Hirst’s art challenges traditional notions of value and mortality, often blurring the lines between artistic genius and commercial spectacle.

“I’ve worked with Crusoe Contemporary for about 18 months now, and every painting has been an easy purchase”

“I’ve worked with Crusoe Contemporary for about 18 months now, and every painting has been an easy purchase.

They just get what I want. Unlike other galleries where it’s ‘take it or leave it,’ Crusoe is flexible, knowledgeable, and has a different approach. I’ve had commissions before where you never even meet the artist, but with Crusoe, you’re part of the process—you get proofs, you give feedback, and the final piece is exactly what you wanted. I can call them with an idea and within hours or days, they’ve found exactly what I’m looking for. Nine times out of ten, you don’t even know a piece is available—but Crusoe will go and find it.

Just do it. Just work with them.”
