About the Artwork
Into Place is a screenprint by Bridget Riley, a leading figure in Op Art, known for her visually dynamic and immersive geometric compositions. Created in 2013, this piece exemplifies Riley’s mastery of color, rhythm, and perception, drawing the viewer into an almost pulsating visual experience. In Into Place, Riley arranges a series of vertical stripes in varying colors, carefully positioned to create a harmonious yet energetic interaction between tones. The color palette includes soft pastels juxtaposed with more intense hues, demonstrating her deep understanding of how colors influence one another when placed in sequence. The composition appears to shift and vibrate, a hallmark of her Op Art technique, which challenges the viewer’s perception of movement and space. This work continues Riley’s long-standing exploration of optical effects and spatial illusions, building on her earlier experiments with black-and-white patterns and later, color-based abstractions. The precise arrangement of stripes in Into Place evokes a sense of balance and dynamism, making the artwork feel as though it is subtly shifting before the viewer’s eyes. Riley’s calculated yet fluid approach to form and color in Into Place showcases her enduring influence in contemporary abstraction and her ability to create visually stimulating compositions that engage both the eye and the mind.
About the Artist
Bridget Riley (born April 24, 1931) is a British painter best known for her pioneering work in Op Art (Optical Art). Her bold, geometric, and highly structured black-and-white paintings of the 1960s create striking optical illusions that seem to shimmer and move. Later in her career, she introduced vibrant colors into her compositions, further enhancing their dynamic visual effects. Some of her most famous works include Blaze (1964) and Cataract 3 (1967). Riley's meticulous approach to color, form, and perception has made her one of the most influential abstract artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her work continues to inspire contemporary art, design, and fashion.

“I’ve worked with Crusoe Contemporary for about 18 months now, and every painting has been an easy purchase”

“I’ve worked with Crusoe Contemporary for about 18 months now, and every painting has been an easy purchase.

They just get what I want. Unlike other galleries where it’s ‘take it or leave it,’ Crusoe is flexible, knowledgeable, and has a different approach. I’ve had commissions before where you never even meet the artist, but with Crusoe, you’re part of the process—you get proofs, you give feedback, and the final piece is exactly what you wanted. I can call them with an idea and within hours or days, they’ve found exactly what I’m looking for. Nine times out of ten, you don’t even know a piece is available—but Crusoe will go and find it.

Just do it. Just work with them.”
